
Columbia, SC -- The Palmetto Center for Women has awarded its 2010 Palmetto Center for Women Award, its highest honor, to the Southeastern Institute for Women in Politics. This is the first time any organization has unanimously been selected by the Palmetto Center for Women's board. The award was presented in a luncheon awards ceremony on November 16, 2010 at the Marriott in Columbia. Board member Barbara Rackes accepted the award on behalf of the Institute.
The Palmetto Center for Women annually honors a Midlands business or entity that has shown an exceptional contribution in helping to achieve one or more of the five strategic goals of the Palmetto Center for Women:
* Increasing wages and employability of women
* Increasing women's business ownership
* Expanding occupations available to women through improved education
* Increasing the number of women in elected or appointed office, and
* Improving the health and well-being of women.
The Palmetto Center for Women states, "We believe the work the Southeastern Institute for Women in Politics is doing to narrow the political gender gap and help women take their rightful place as powerful political leaders will, in essence, help us reach all five of these goals."

The real honor and recognition goes to our Board of Directors, staff, and all the women who are stepping forward to become South Carolina's future leaders," said Barbara Rackes.
In addition, Barbara Rackes was awarded with the 2010 TWIN Award in the Entrepreneur category. This award is a distinguished honor presented to women whose outstanding achievements mark them as leaders and role models in business and in the community. Since the inception of the TWIN Awards in 1980, over 480 businesswomen have been honored who have made outstanding contributions to their professions and/or community.
