Rex Wins Post In Tight Election

When Jim Rex first considered the notion of entering the race for State Superintendent of Education in late 2005, he was unknown outside academic circles. A former high school teacher and football coach, Rex entered higher education where he served as Dean of Education at both Coastal Carolina University and Winthrop University before ultimately becoming President of Columbia College.

Rex developed a devoted following among educators who recognized the strength of high background as well as his vision for public education.

TRG designed all print and electronic materials for the campaign from the logo through bumper stickers and yard signs, websites, blogs, and a successful emessaging campaign that built a following of more than 50,000 South Carolinians.

Dr. Rex was elected in November by 455 votes, among the narrowest margins of victory ever in the State and is the only Democrat elected to statewide office in the 2006 election cycle. Statistically, nearly 100,000 South Carolinians voted a straight Republican ticket but for a single race--State Superintendent of Education--demonstrating that a strong message and a professional background supercede political party.
